In today's globalized world, major world religions are paid public attention only when they trigger off global dynamics. Local faith communities--Christian, Muslim or otherwise--and the meaningful ways in which they live out their faith remain largely unnoticed. Nevertheless, from a theological perspective, the ethos of local faith communities that live in relation to a specific time and place is of vital importance. In this article, I shall explore the situation of Christians in contemporary Indonesia. I shall argue that substantial theological reflection is needed in order to respond to the current challenges emerging not only out of the vibrant religious diversity in the archipelago, but involving controversial government policies with regard to religious affairs and related to the significant changes in society over recent years.
